One of my main reasons for picking the Diamond Campground was it was an easy 2.5 mile hike from a hot springs. So we got up this morning, had some pancakes, and headed out for our hike…only to find that Utah closed the trail until further notice because of Covid. So Sam and I just walked our campground’s “discovery trail.” In hindsite, it’s probably a good thing I didn’t hike 5 miles on my ankle. Advil does wonderful things but to be able to hike later this week, another day mostly off of it was probably good.

Our latest parking spot is in the Willow Wind RV resort in Hurricane, UT. Hurricane is a nice town just outside St. George and Zion National Park. It’s also only a couple hours from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. When we found out J wasn’t going to be able to join us, I had to make some last minute reservation changes. That’s not so easy in June for anything near recreation areas, when you really want electric hookups because of the heat. I struck out right and left. So when I finally found this spot in Hurricane, I grabbed it. It’s not like a typical place we would stay but it’s nice. It’s sort of like if Post apartments had an RV resort. Every site has a shade tree (rare in the desert) and there is a little dog park right next to our site. So you’ll get no complaints from me.

As I said, one of the main reasons we chose to stay in Hurricane (other than its all we could find near here) is it’s proximity to the Grand Canyon. So that’s the trip we had planned for tomorrow…until I just looked and saw that the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is closed for a forest fire right in the forest we would have to drive through to get there. The fire is only 2% contained. So I don’t think it will be cleared up in time for us to get down there in the next 3 days. Guess we’ll just have to come back another year! https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/grand-canyon-national-park-temporarily-closes-north-rim-due-to-mangum-fire-2020-06-12.htm

The Magnum Fire on the Kaibab National Forest

There are plenty of other things to do around here. I’ll just (once again) have to do some rearranging.
