Today the boys did a full day out fly fishing with a guide on a drift boat on a lake. The rivers are running way too high and fast to do any river fishing. Since the boys are out and about today it left Sam and I to our own devices. I went out horseback riding this morning out in the badlands and Sam stuck around the campground.

Horseback riding was amazing. It was pretty warm and definitely sunburn weather. I got a wonderful horse, brownie, to ride. He treated me well. Very oddly, my legs were totally fine while I was riding and I don’t remember any issues when I hopped down, but somehow I jacked up my left ankle. It’s pretty swollen and hurts like heck. So I’ve been icing it and trying to keep it elevated. Fingers crossed it doesn’t mess up our hiking down in Utah in a couple days.

The boys had their best day yet. Together they caught 17 or so fish. It was a mix of rainbow trout and something else that I don’t remember. Their guide, Mark, brought his Belgian malamute. E is in total love with that dog now. They were out fishing for about seven hours and somehow managed to only get a little bit burned.

The pond/lake where they were wasn’t very far at all from our ranch. But it seemed like it was forever off of the main road. All of the scenery was amazing.

After fishing, we treated ourselves to a dinner out in town. We found a great restaurant, the Cowboy Café, with outdoor seating. The burgers were great, the homemade pies were amazing, and the moose droppings (a.k.a. fried Cheese) were super yummy… Or maybe it was just that we hadn’t eaten out in a real restaurant in over three months that made it taste so great.

Drive Time: practically none

Tomorrow we head south to Utah.

Fingers crossed that my ankle repairs itself over night!

Xoxo, Shelly
